Ryley's Daily Basketball Pick: March 25th
Day 2 of the Sweet 16 is here and nobody thought these two teams would have made it this far. Who will keep their Cinderella story alive?
Today we have 11 seed Iowa State squaring off against 10 seed Miami. Both these teams are riding the high of the underdog story, but one will have to go home tonight.
Iowa State is clearly the better defensive team but Miami has the better offense. Miami’s defense is abysmal, ranking 337th in defending catch and shoot three-pointers. Iowa State has 3 starters shooting over 35% from three, giving them multiple players that can make Miami pay for leaving them open. The Cyclones' most efficient buckets come on cuts to the rim. Miami has trouble trying to contain cuts to the basket, ranking 227th. Now the Cyclones defense is what will be the difference maker.
Iowa State forces turnovers at a 24.7% rate, which ranks them fourth in the nation. The Cyclones also lock down the three point arc as they hold opposing teams to under 29% from three. Miami has shown fireworks on the offensive end but they have not seen a defense like this. The Cyclones defense will slow down the game, giving them an opportunity to control the pace. This will be a low scoring battle and that is just the game Iowa State plays. Give me Iowa State (+3.5)
