Ryley’s Basketball Pick - March 24th
The tournament keeps on March-ing on, and we have finally reached the Sweet 16.
In today's matchup we have 11 seed Michigan taking on 2 seed Villanova tipping off at 7:30 eastern. Back in 2018, Michigan fell short against Villanova in the national championship game. This is a long awaited rematch between two perennial powerhouses.
Michigan should be highly motivated for this contest as they attempt to make back-to-back elite eight appearances. Michigan’s offense will run through their star big man Hunter Dickinson, who is currently averaging 24 points since the start of the tournament. Dickinson is over seven feet tall, weighing in at 260 pounds. Villanova does not have anybody on their roster over 6’8 besides their forward Eric Dixon. This could be a problem for Villanova, as they are wildy outmatched in the paint, especially if Dixon gets into foul trouble.
Michigan has gotten hot down the stretch and is arguably playing their best basketball of the year. The Villanova Wildcats lack of depth and size has Dickinson primed for a huge game. I don’t see how Villanova can match up with a post scorer like Dickinson. With the slow paced Villanova offense and Michigan’s size advantage, this game will come down to whoever possesses the ball last. If Michigan protects the ball, prevents turnovers, and limits Villanova’s fast break opportunities they can win outright. The safe move is to take the points. My Pick: Michigan Wolverines +5.
